Start With Why: How Understanding Your Purpose Helps You Navigate Your Next Horizon

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” — Often attributed to Mark Twain

Most people begin setting goals by asking one simple question:

“What do I want to achieve?”

Perhaps it’s a promotion, a new career, better health, financial freedom, or stronger relationships. These are all worthwhile ambitions, but they often have one thing in common—they focus on what rather than why.

At Novista Coaching, we believe lasting personal growth doesn’t begin with a destination. It begins with understanding yourself.

That’s why our coaching philosophy, Navigate Your Next Horizon, encourages people to discover the purpose behind their ambitions before deciding where to go next.

When you understand your why, your goals become more meaningful, your decisions become clearer, and your path forward becomes easier to navigate.

Why Goals Sometimes Fail

Every January, millions of people make resolutions.

  • Lose weight.
  • Exercise more.
  • Find a better job.
  • Learn a new skill.

Yet by February, many of these goals have quietly disappeared. The problem usually isn’t motivation, it’s that the goal wasn’t connected to something deeper.

Without purpose, goals become tasks. Without meaning, discipline becomes difficult. Without connection to your values, success can even feel empty.

Have you ever achieved something you’d worked incredibly hard for, only to wonder…

“Is this really what I wanted?”

That’s often because the achievement wasn’t aligned with who you really are.

Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle

Leadership expert Simon Sinek introduced the Golden Circle to explain why inspirational leaders and organisations consistently outperform others. The model is beautifully simple.

It asks three questions.

WHY

  • Why do you do what you do?
  • What drives you?
  • What impact do you want to make?
  • What gives your life meaning?

HOW

  • How do you bring your purpose to life?
  • What strengths do you use?
  • What behaviours define you?
  • What principles guide your decisions?

WHAT

  • What actions do you take?
  • What goals do you pursue?
  • What habits do you build?
  • What achievements do you seek?

Most people live from the outside in.

They know what they’re doing. Sometimes they know how they’re doing it. Few spend time understanding why. Yet the Why influences everything else.

Your Personal Golden Circle

The Golden Circle isn’t just a leadership model. It’s a powerful framework for understanding yourself. Imagine applying it personally.

Instead of asking:

“What career should I have?”

Ask:

Why do I want this career?

Instead of:

“What goals should I set this year?”

Ask:

Why do these goals matter to me?

Instead of:

“How do I become successful?”

Ask:

What does success actually mean to me?

These questions uncover something much more powerful than ambition. They uncover purpose.

Why Your Values Matter

Purpose doesn’t exist in isolation; it’s rooted in your values.

Values are the principles that guide your decisions when nobody is watching. They influence how you define success; they shape the relationships you build; they determine how you respond to setbacks.

If your goals conflict with your values, life feels uncomfortable.

You might achieve success while simultaneously feeling exhausted, disconnected or unfulfilled. That’s because achievement without alignment rarely creates happiness.

When your goals support your values, however, something changes. Motivation becomes intrinsic, decision-making becomes simpler and confidence grows because you’re no longer chasing someone else’s definition of success.

Beliefs Shape Your Horizon

Our beliefs influence what we think is possible.

Some beliefs empower us. Others quietly limit us.

You may believe:

  • I’m not good enough.
  • It’s too late to change careers.
  • Successful people are naturally confident.
  • I don’t deserve happiness.

Whether these beliefs are true is almost irrelevant. If you believe them, they’ll shape your decisions. Coaching creates the space to question those assumptions.

Many limiting beliefs aren’t facts; they’re stories we’ve repeated for years. Once challenged, new possibilities begin to appear, and your horizon suddenly expands.

Defining Your Personal Horizon

At Novista Coaching, we often talk about horizons.

A horizon isn’t simply a destination; It’s the point where possibility meets vision. As you move towards it, the horizon moves too.

Growth works in exactly the same way. Every achievement reveals another opportunity. Every lesson creates another level. Every experience broadens your perspective.

Your horizon is constantly evolving.

The question is:

Are you intentionally choosing its direction?

Navigating Your Next Horizon

Our coaching approach isn’t about giving people answers. It’s about helping them discover their own.

We help clients explore questions such as:

  • What truly matters to me?
  • What strengths am I underusing?
  • Which beliefs are holding me back?
  • What kind of life do I genuinely want?
  • What impact do I want to have?
  • What would success look like if nobody else’s opinion mattered?

These conversations create clarity. Clarity creates confidence, confidence creates action, and action creates momentum.

Turning Your Why into Goals

Once you’ve discovered your Why, goal setting becomes much easier. Instead of creating random objectives, you create intentional ones.

For example:

WHY

I want to help others grow and become the best version of themselves.

HOW

By developing my coaching skills, listening deeply and creating supportive environments.

WHAT

  • Gain a coaching qualification.
  • Build my coaching business.
  • Publish regular articles.
  • Coach ten new clients this year.

Notice how every goal now supports a deeper purpose. This creates resilience when challenges inevitably appear.

A Simple Exercise

Take a notebook and answer these questions.

Why

  • What gives me energy?
  • What makes me feel fulfilled?
  • What difference do I want to make?
  • When do I feel most alive?

How

  • What strengths do I naturally use?
  • Which values define me?
  • How do I want people to describe me?
  • What behaviours am I proud of?

What

  • What goals naturally emerge from this?
  • What habits support these goals?
  • What actions can I begin today?

Don’t rush the answers. Purpose isn’t discovered in five minutes; it’s uncovered through reflection.

The Journey Matters

One of the greatest misconceptions about personal development is believing that life has a final destination.

It doesn’t. There is always another horizon. Another lesson. Another opportunity to grow. Your purpose may remain constant while your goals evolve. That’s completely natural.

Growth isn’t about becoming someone else. It’s about becoming more fully yourself.

Navigate Your Next Horizon

At Novista Coaching, we believe everyone has the capacity to create a meaningful, fulfilling future. Sometimes all that’s missing is clarity.

When you understand your Why, align your goals with your values and challenge the beliefs that limit you, life becomes less about drifting and more about intentional direction.

Your horizon stops being something that simply appears in the distance. It becomes something you actively choose to pursue, because your future isn’t defined by chance. It’s shaped by purpose.

And every meaningful journey begins by asking one simple question:

Why?
